There appear to be five basic systems employed to protect inventive and
literary properties: patents, copyrights, trademarks, trade secrets, and contracts.
Copyrights appear to have the greatest value for protecting computer
programs and databases, but the other elements patents, trademarks,
trade secrets, and contracts have some applications, or perceived application,
to this area.
