- Abstract
- While working as a teacher, the preparation of mathematics measures was one of my duties. Tests are the prevalent ways of examining what students have learned. It was easy to prepare the appropriate tests considering your students; however, unfairness is always possible for large-scale tests. Even if students have the same abilities, they can get different scores because of construct-irrelevant factors like gender or race that may impact examinees' achievement on the item. My research focuses on making the tests more valid by detecting the questions that exhibit differences or bias for/against any groups. I took this photo in 2017 in the Dominican Republic. Although I was not a Ph.D. student at that time, when I was sitting on the beach and saw these boys, I felt the difference between them. Their race was different, probably their socioeconomic status, as well. Then I thought, if they were taking the same test, what would be the result. I wondered if their background had an impact on their score regardless of their abilities. Now, I am aware that these thoughts directed me to my current research.
