Abstract

In this image, we are producing a chicken in more ways than one. The first you can see, however, the second is less obvious. Within the bucket are ingredients that will be mixed together to produce a diet that will be fed to chickens. These ingredients, such as corn and soybean meal, provide essential nutrients required to grow a chicken. These nutrients include protein, carbohydrates, lipids, vitamins, and minerals (and water!). My research involves using nutritional intervention, rather than pharmaceuticals, to help combat coccidiosis in chickens. Coccidiosis is a parasitic disease which results in poor growth, nutrient malabsorption, and intestinal damage in chickens. By manipulating the ingredients and nutrients provided in the diet of the chicken, we hope to reduce the severity of infection, diminish the reproductive ability of the parasite, and improve the health of the chicken. Research by means of feeding trials, such as this, allows animal nutritionists to attain the knowledge needed to continuously improve the well-being of our animals.
