- Abstract
- How do we make music matter? The pandemic has changed the way we consume music, and for orchestras around the world, the way they share it. Composers shifted gears. Most of us live to hear our loud, bombastic large-scale works performed in the biggest stages, that we forget to look inward, to be intimate. This moment has allowed us, sometimes even forced us, to write smaller, more personal, works for solo musicians to be performed in the smallest stage: the six-inch screen in our pockets. That is not to say orchestral music has not been performed. With social-distancing, mask modifications to fit wind instruments, musicians have found ways to make music. I believe it is this relentless desire to make music, this drive to share meaningful performances of music, that make music matter.
