- Abstract
- Nitryl chloride (\chem{ClNO_2}) is of atmospheric interest, since it is produced by heterogeneous reactions, in the marine troposphere, between \chem{NaCl} sea-salt aerosols and gaseous \chem{N_2O_5}\footnote{B. J. Finlayson-Pitts \textit{et al.}, \textit{Nature} \textbf{337}, 241 (1989); W. Behnke \textit{et al.}, \textit{J. Aerosol Sci.} \textbf{24}, 115 (1993); H. D. Osthoff \textit{et al.}, \textit{Nat. Geosci.} \textbf{1}, 324 (2008).}, in the polluted continental air\footnote{L. H. Mielke \textit{et al.}, \textit{Environ. Sci. Technol.} \textbf{45}, 8889 (2011); G. J. Phillips \textit{et al.}, \textit{Geophys. Res. Lett.} \textbf{39}, L10811 (2012).}, and possibly also on polar stratospheric clouds, between \chem{N_2O_5} and solid \chem{HCl}\footnote{M. A. Tolbert, M. J. Rossi, and D. M. Golden, \textit{Science} \textbf{240}, 1018 (1988); M. T. Leu, \textit{Geophys. Res. Lett.} \textbf{15}, 851 (1988).}. Many high-resolution spectroscopic studies of \chem{ClNO_2} in the microwave and mid-infrared regions are available\footnote{J.-M. Flaud, A. Anantharajah, F. Kwabia Tchana \textit{et al.}, \textit{JQSRT} \textbf{224}, 217 (2019).}. However, \chem{ClNO_2} presents two fundamentals in the far-infrared region below 600 \wn, with the lowest one corresponding to the \chem{Cl}-\chem{N} stretching mode, \nub{3} around 370 \wn. A new investigation of the \nub{3} bands of $^{35}$\chem{ClNO_2} and $^{37}$\chem{ClNO_2} has been performed using a high resolution (0.00102 \wn) Fourier transform spectrum recorded at SOLEIL with highly improved experimental conditions as compared to a previous study\footnote{J. Orphal, M. Morillon-Chapey, S. Klee, G. C. Mellau, and M. Winnewisser, \textit{J. Mol. Spectrosc.} \textbf{109}, 101 (1998).}, leading to a \textit{well resolved spectrum}. As a consequence, significantly better results than previously were obtained. The line assignments were pursued up to higher \textit{J} and \textit{K}$_{a}$ quantum number values, \textit{J} = 83 and \textit{K}$_{a}$ = 44. For both isotopomers, a total of 6331 transitions were reproduced with a root-mean-square deviation of $2\times10^{-4}$ \wn using a Watson-type \textit{A}-reduced Hamiltonian. Improved band centers, rotational and centrifugal distortion constants for the \nub{3} fundamental bands of $^{35}$\chem{ClNO_2} and $^{37}$\chem{ClNO_2} have been determined. The synthetic line list obtained in this study will be interesting for future measurements of \chem{ClNO_2} in the atmosphere, e.g. using the new satellite mission FORUM (ESA) covering the 150-1400 \wn spectral region.
