- Abstract
- Karel Husa was one of the most respected American musicians of the 20th century. In addition to his general musical reputation he was well-known as a champion of the wind ensemble medium, composing more than a dozen works for band. This dissertation will explore his last significant wind work, Les Couleurs Fauves [The Vivid Colors]. Many components of Husa’s music are not easily accessible aurally, but through intense study and thorough analysis of his compositional techniques, conductors are able to develop a clear aural impression that will help them perform his works more powerfully. This study is intended as a resource to aid future conductors to create a conceptual understanding of the compositional techniques that are found in music of this style. By using that understanding they will be able to create more informed and musically compelling rehearsals and performances. This dissertation comprises a study of Husa’s life and career, then moves to examine his most common compositional techniques, using this knowledge to create the first thorough structural analysis of Les Couleurs Fauves. It should serve as a catalyst for further interpretation and study of this significant composer, which, it is hoped, will bring about a greater level of understanding of, and insight into, Karel Husa’s unique musical style.
