Abstract
On March 1, 2007, ISTC (while it was known as the Hazardous Waste and Information Center) organized a mini-conference entitled “Characteristics and Reuse Potential of Illinois River Sediments” in order to summarize the research that has been conducted on Illinois River sediments over the 10-year period: 1998-2007.
As Dr. John Marlin, then associate director at the Center and conference co-organizer, stated in his overview for the conference, “The degradation of the Illinois River and its floodplain has been discussed for over a century. The development of the Integrated Management Plan for the Illinois River Watershed in 1997 launched the latest effort to identify and address problems and plan for the meeting the economic and ecological needs of the watershed. The loss of backwater depth due to sedimentation was identified as a major impact on the river’s ecological and recreational functions.”
Research funds were provided by the Illinois General Assembly and from a number of other sources over the years to gain a better understanding of the physical and chemical nature of the river sediments as well as to assess sediment removal technology and find potential beneficial uses for the dredged material.
The conference had over 60 participants who were provided the opportunity to hear from 8 researchers about their studies on the river.
