Abstract
Americanization in Europe must be viewed in a historical context in order to be understood correctly. Therefore, this paper analyzes the ever-changing relationship between Western Europe and the United States over time, while considering aspects of national, political, and popular culture. From the early twentieth century until today, America’s relationship with France and Germany has fluctuated, while a strong resistance to American culture has persisted. This opposition has resulted in fairly negative perceptions of the U.S. and its contagious popular culture. Thus, Hollywood and the European film industry are also examined, showing the relevance of popular culture and its influence on society throughout various political environments. Though Hollywood’s dominance is one apparent example of Americanization, this is changing. Hollywood should now be viewed as a transnational corporation, providing a global language and platform, which has the potential to unite the U.S. and Europe through a shared popular culture.
