Abstract
This
project
provides
a comprehensive pedagogical guide for teachers
and
intermediate
to advanced students who wish to explore Mompou’s piano repertoire but are unfamiliar with it.
Chapter 1 briefly
explores
Mompou’s life and music, including his biography, his
musical
style,
and
influences from his contemporaries.
This chapter also
investigates
Mompou’s thoughts on
piano
playing
by
referring
to
his pedagogical instructions
on
piano
as
expressed in
his
piano
treatise
L’Expressió, per a la interpretació al piano
(Expression for Interpretation at the Piano)
and
his own
recordings.
In Chapter 2,
my
research has been devoted to categorizing
Mompou’s
complete piano works into pedagogical levels
and musical
styles.
This
includes a survey of
Mompou’s
complete piano
works
organized
in
to
five
major
musical styles
and
in their
order of
difficulty:
Intermediate (I),
Advanced-Intermediate
(AI), and
Advanced (A).
This
exhaustive
list
includes both published
works and
those
that
were discovered and published
after Mompou’s
lifetime.
Each piece is accompanied by a brief
description of its musical style and features,
and
is
followed by a pedagogical commentary that addresses technical issues and performance
practices.
An alphabetical list of
his complete piano works with accompanying pedagogical
references is provided in the Appendix.
