Abstract
For
millennia, women have been involved in the history of music.
All too often their stories are
left out of
the
larger
narrative. Women composers are underrepresented
in music history books
and
on concert programs. Feminism and
gender
studies
have helped further the cause of women
in music.
Increasingly
more organizations such as The Women’s Philharmonic Advocacy and
The Institute for Composer Diversity are advocating for more performances of historic
and
contemporary women composers. This document examines the struggles of four women
composers who were writing mostly tonal late-romantic and early-twentieth century music
that
spanned 100 years.
This document will highlight the compositions of Alma Schindler-Mahler,
Florence Beatrice Price,
María
Teresa Prieto,
and Yuliya Veysberg.
By
highlighting some lesser
known women composers,
I hope to
add to
the growing interest of
works composed by
women.
