Abstract
This essay
explores parallels
between
trumpet and violin pedagogy through
the trumpet’s
use of sustained
wind flow
to
the
violinist’s shifting:
the
left hand motion up and down the
fingerboard to play notes in different positions.
This is
a
powerful visual for the trumpet player
as shifting is easily seen and wind flow is invisible.
To
provide pedagogical context, I will
focus
on
a prominent
teacher
for
each instrument:
Otakar
Ševčík
(violin)
and Vincent Cichowicz
(trumpet).
This essay begins
by outlining
Otakar
Ševčík’s life
and
discussing
his published violin
method
and
teaching philosophies. This is
followed by
discussing
Vincent Cichowicz’s life,
method, and
teaching.
Finally,
as a resource for trumpet players
I have adapted selected exercises
from
Ševčík’s
Op. 8 Shifting the Position and Preparatory Scale Studies
for the trumpet.
As a
violinist and trumpeter throughout my high school and undergraduate years, I am
qualified to
explore these parallels and create
this
adaptation. The
ultimate
goal of this
essay
is to provide a
resource for trumpet
teachers
and students.
By
working through this
adaptation of
Ševčík’s
Op.
8
–
an etude book originally for violin,
the trumpet player is able
to gain insight into
the violinist’s
perspective
of mastering shifting technique.
Moreover, this can be used to isolate
the concept of
sustaining wind flow
and
understand
how the
visual
is effective.
