- Abstract
- Tourism is regarded as an unprecedented human movement after World War II. A considerable number of people leave their place every day to travel to different places. However, virtual reality technology has changed the way tourism practices. People now can travel a destination or an attraction without an actual visit. As it provides advantages such as no traffic, no line, and low cost, many scholars worried that virtual tourism will replace actual tourism. As the image shows, they concerned that people might choose virtual travel rather than actual travel. Do you agree with them? It seems people still prefer actual travel over virtual travel. A lot of research revealed that people skeptically anticipated that virtual travel will replace the actual one. There are some studies about the technological limitations of virtual tourism. Is it solely because of technological issues? I would like to seek the reasons beyond technological issues. Specifically, I would like to look at how tourist interacts with a place is different from how tourist interacts with a virtual place. The outcome of my research will not only expand knowledge of virtual tourism but also provide insights to both the virtual reality industry and destination marketers.
