Abstract

"""Gatos"" directly translated from Portuguese means cats; however, ""gatos"" in the context of the favela describes the informal connections to powerlines. Due to the nature of the favelas’ informal settlements and lack of recognition from local government; utility companies often do very little to maintain or provide essential utilities like electricity, water and internet. Favelas and its dwellers have been historically marginalized and left to fend for themselves. This image portrays the entrepreneurial spirit, agency, and resistance of people living in favelas for their existence, inclusion and humanity. The coffee in the image here alludes to the Cyber Cafés or LAN houses that provided necessary access to internet and computers in the favela. The access to internet and information, like water, is widely recognized as an essential human right in 21st century society. My research focuses on the appropriate uses of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs), community-based organization and entrepreneurship for development, education and empowerment in the global south. I hope to make great strides collectively in eliminating poverty and providing inclusive and equitable, quality education for all."
