Abstract

Carbon Dots are an astonishing class of fluorescence (glowing) materials with numerous advantages over the conventional materials owing to their water solubility, higher brightness, stability and low toxicity. This image shows different solutions of carbon dots (CDs) in various organic solvents obtained after column chromatography separation procedure with the top image under ambient light whereas the bottom image is under UV light excitation. The gradual color change from violet to yellow via blue indicates a gradual increase in polarity of the CDs in the solvent. My research focuses on understanding how and why these CDs fluoresce (glow!) and how we can make it brighter and tune its color even more. Studying this would be of critical importance as that would help us designing CDs for applications in bioimaging, photovoltaics, etc.
