- Abstract
- "My research focuses on the aging in place phenomenon, which is ""the ability to live in one's home and community safely, independently, and comfortably regardless of age, income, or ability level"" (CDC, 2009). I am interested in aging in place experience among older adults who are aging with long term mobility disability. The goal of the research is to understand the way physical properties of the home environment influence older adults' feeling of competence in conducting their everyday activities, as well as to identify the gaps or conflicting design suggestions in the accessible design standards for aging in place. I will be collecting the behavioral and physical environmental data to effectively design a supportive environment for aging in place, especially with disability in mind. I took this picture when I toured an assisted living community. Mr. A, a resident, showed me the 'new' addition on his bed. Since he got the lifting pole, he no longer needs help from others to get up in the morning. ""I could start my day independently,"" he said. ""Where are you gonna be when you grow old?"" should not matter, as long as the built environment is designed to support older adults' independence."
