- Abstract
- """Being a two-time cancer survivor at the age of 24, I have a unique understanding of how transient, fragile, and wonderful life is. As a doctoral engineering student, my aspiration is to protect our precious earth by curbing our society's CO2 emission by reinventing the LEDs. Engineering against the large white gallium and smaller magenta nitrogen atoms' natural inclination to arrange themselves in zig zags, I found a way for the gallium nitride LED crystal's atoms to align in a dumbbell fashion. Keeping the atoms nicely separated by 0.3 nanometers over a quintillion times per LED took chemistry, physics, my advisor's funds, and my tears. The reward is a new LED crystal that converts electricity to photons at a rate and efficiency far beyond the theoretical limit of the modern-day LEDs. I presented my research and its commercialization at the US Patent and Trademark Office in 2019. The path to a greener future is full of detractors and skeptics. I am revolutionizing the lighting industry. What will you do?"""
