- Abstract
- Compact cities are becoming the norm worldwide. As the competition for ground space increases in these cities the green space essential for human health and well-being, gets squeezed out. Physical and mental health suffers. When there are limitations to develop horizontally, vertical space would be new opportunities. Vertical greening (VG) as one type of smart landscape—greening a roof garden, a façade or a living wall system has been proposed as a potential solution to increase green spaces smartly and efficiently. Unfortunately, the success rate of vertical greening projects has been low because of the requirements for technological advances (build and maintain) and limited suitable locations. With the increasing ubiquity of compact urban areas there is an urgent need to study the design and application of vertical green spaces to improve its success rate and potential viability. Based on literature review and integrated analysis, I will propose several VG’s prototypes in one pilot city and testify their benefits to solve target problems (e.g. heat-island effect or air pollution) and relieve the phenomenon of green space insufficiency.
