- Abstract
- My research focuses on Yellow Warbler and the special “seet” call they make. Yellow Warblers seet call to warn each other about nearby Brown-headed Cowbirds, which lay their eggs in the nests of other species and leave the hosts to care for the cowbird chick. To learn more about how Yellow Warblers learn and use this call to defend against cowbirds, I play different calls to the warblers in the field and record their behavior. We also catch many of them to take their measurements and fit them with a band that contains a specific ID number, similar to a social security number. This photo features a male Yellow Warbler patiently waiting to get fitted for his bands. Yellow Warblers are generally quite calm and inquisitive about the humans holding them, as you can see by his demeanor.
