- Abstract
- Fluids are typically uncolored and shapeless, which makes them difficult to be observed and recorded. Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) is a popular modern optical method of flow visualization used for both education and research studies. The particle tracer seedings are added into the fluids, which are assumed sufficiently small to drift and follow the flow motions. An intense laser is then used to illuminate the particles that can be captured by the camera to record their movement and thus be used to calculate the fluid speed and directions for studying the flow properties. My research study involved using PIV technique to investigate the flow characteristics of aquatic vegetation flows in nature. A dense, random array of acrylic rigid cylinders were used to simulate the plant canopy in streams as shown in the image.
