- Abstract
- Tracer particle path lines show the flow over a 3D printed coral model in a flume tank. Visualizing the flow with tracer particles allows us to see how the current interacts with surface structures and could affect coral larvae swimming nearby. Flow effects near surfaces are important because the larvae need to settle on surfaces to grow to adulthood. Increasing this settlement can also aid in coral reef recovery since more settled larvae in each spawning means more adult coral in the future. By learning about surface-flow interactions and their effect on larval swimming and settlement, we can design new surfaces to help more baby coral find homes.
