- Abstract
- This image shows undergraduate field assistants catching Beameria venosa, a species of cicada only found on the clifftops overlooking the Mississippi floodplains of southern Illinois. Unlike many other species of cicadas, this particular species can be difficult to locate due its small size and high-pitched call. There are only two Nature Preserves in Illinois where this species can be found and we hope our research on the ecology and population genetics of these animals can help to preserve them on this unique landscape for generations to come. Our time spent on these clifftops has also resulted in the discovery of another previously undocumented species of Illinois, Neotibicen auriferus, the field cicada.
