- Amyloid beta plaques are made up of clumps of insoluble protein fibrils found outside of nerve cells in patients with Alzheimer's disease. The presence of these amyloid beta plaques has been implicated in neuronal cell death, ultimately leading to symptoms of dementia. Major efforts to combat the disease have included the disruption and dismantling of amyloid plaques via the development of novel macrocyclic drugs. This artistic portrayal is a computational characterization of a potential macrocycle binding site, effective at dismantling and disrupting amyloid beta fibril formation under experimental conditions. Visual Molecular Dynamics (VMD) was exclusively used to make this image.
