Abstract
This thesis explores the composition Flaming Walls, a trio for trumpet, trombone, and
piano written by American composer Zack Browning. Flaming Walls was commissioned by the
Florida-based ensemble Confluences who premiered it at the 14th Annual Bonk Festival of New
Music in Tampa, Florida in 2005.
This thesis serves as a preparation guide through an analysis of, and the author’s
performance experience with, Flaming Walls. Background information about the composer and
his compositions accompany this document. The primary focus of the thesis is to provide
strategies for successfully navigating the work by discussing the technical demands and
interpretation of the composition. A detailed analysis of the musical structure of the work will
accompany recommendations for individual practice. Suggestions will be provided for
troubleshooting potential issues within the trumpet part, and rehearsal guidelines based upon
personal experience with the piece will be offered to aid in the preparation of performing
Flaming Walls. The objective of this study is to inform musicians about Flaming Walls and other works composed by Zack Browning.
