We discuss our effort toward designing experiments to surpass the standard quantum limit in deflection and displacement measurements. First, we review weak measurement techniques, then describe our strategy and results from implementing recycling to measure a beam deflection. We then discuss how spatial correlations emerge from spontaneous parametric downconversion and how we utilize those correlations to improve the achievable resolution of a beam displacement. Finally, we discuss a possible way to use a quantum eraser to improve the signal from an atomic force microscope.
