Abstract

A “fixed mindset” is the belief that what people are good at is dictated by natural ability, and one’s performance is indicative of their personal traits. Alternatively, a “growth mindset” believes that all abilities can be developed through effort and perseverance. A student’s mindset and self-perception can influence their love of learning, commitment to education, and consequently their academic performance. The University Primary School (UPS) employs the Reggio Emilia Approach (Reggio), a non-traditional teaching style centered on the idea that education should build on children’s inherent curiosity, creativity, and competence. This study investigates how Reggio at UPS encourages growth mindsets in elementary school students and considers how regular classrooms can implement these ideas.
