Abstract
This scholarly essay compares selected cello works of Johannes Brahms (1865, 1886) and Robert Schumann (1849). For Brahms, Schumann was one of the greatest composers as well as his mentor. For Schumann, Brahms was a brilliant young composer and a rising star in musical society. Chapter 1 explores general features of these works, including their origin, premieres and publishing history. Chapter 2 is a comparative study of the composers’ different writing styles, comparing musical elements, including range, leaps, and articulation, as well as versions for the cello and other instruments. This study explores two of the greatest composers of the Romantic period’s cello works chronologically, from their first works for solo instrument and piano to their later music, tracing the changes in their style.
