Abstract
Oxide-confined Vertical-cavity Surface-Emitting Lasers (VCSELs) at 850 nm have been widely deployed in optical data transmission as the optical transmitters. However, the data transmission capability of commercial VCSELs used in 100 m optical links with direct non-return-to-zero (NRZ) modulation has been limited to 25 Gb/s for years. At the same time, there is a tremendous growth of data traffic in data centers due to technology advances such as cloud computing. Therefore, it is important to develop oxide-VCSELs that have better data transmission capability to solve the global data traffic growth problem. This thesis will focus on the development of oxide-VCSELs that are able to transmit error-free 50 Gb/s data with direct NRZ modulation in 100 m optical fiber at room temperature.
