Abstract
Italian composer Francesco Paolo Tosti produced a large number
of
well-crafted
songs in
Italian, French and English, many of which (especially the Italian songs) are staple repertoire
choices for undergraduate voice majors
in study and performance. His English-language parlor
songs are less well known. However, many are worthy of consideration and inclusion in the
thoughtful selection of repertoire for the technical and artistic development of a singer. First
evaluating the historical, musical
context of Victorian London within which these songs were
composed, published, and marketed, this study provides
a pedagogical, textual and musical
evaluation of seven of the seventy English
songs
by Tosti. The goal of this project is to provide
a launching platform should these selections be chosen
for use by undergraduate voice majors
and their teachers for specific vocal
and artistic development goals.
