Abstract
This short essay presents a simple definition of the relationship between automated systems, autonomous systems, and semi-autonomous systems within robotics and machine systems. This working definition was derived from the theoretical knowledge and practical experience of the authors with robotics and systems engineering. It is intended to spark further conversation within the relevant communities and help work toward a standard definition in practice.
