Abstract
Paul Dooley is a composer whose growing body of repertoire for the wind band has been
gaining consistent recognition. His compositions have received positive critical reviews, won
several awards, and are consistently programmed for performances at important events within
the wind band community.
This paper provides
an
analysis
of
three works by Paul Dooley,
Mavericks, Coast of
Dreams,
and
Masks and Machines,
while
offering practical information for ensemble
preparation. An examination of each
wind band
score
and comparison to
the
orchestral versions
offers
insight into the compositional and orchestrational process of the composer. Information
gleaned from several interviews, email correspondences, and meetings with the composer is
provided.
It
is the aim of this paper
to encourage
more conductors
to
program Dooley’s music,
as
well as consider expanding the wind band repertoire through future commissions.
