Abstract
Nikolai Kapustin’s 24 Preludes and Fugues, Op. 82 was written in 1997 and has received
little attention in the scholarly literature. In his compositions, Kapustin is perhaps best known
for combining classical forms with jazz harmony, placing his music within the third-stream
movement. This study will feature an in-depth investigation into the particular classical and jazz
elements found in the 24 Preludes and Fugues. A history of the prelude and fugue genre will be
briefly explored in order to illustrate how Kapustin retains elements and deviates from traditional
norms of the genre. Naturally, any composer that writes a set of 24 preludes and fugues will be
compared to the master of the genre, J. S. Bach. This study will show the influence of Bach on
Kapustin’s compositional style in the 24 Preludes and Fugues. Additionally, a complete analysis
of 12 selected preludes and fugues will be valuable and beneficial to future scholars and
performers,
who
