Abstract
This thesis is an in-depth study of the Cello Concerto No. 1 Op. 136
(1934) by Darius
Milhaud. Specially, this paper
provides
an overview of Milhaud’s use of jazz and Brazilian
music in his Cello Concerto No. 1 and its resulting status as a hybrid of Western and non-Western musical genres. Included is a musical analysis from the perspective of a performer with
the intention to assist in understanding and overcoming technical and interpretive challenges.
Specific performance suggestions and practice guidelines are also
discussed.
