- Abstract
- The Wind Engineering Research Laboratory at UIUC is devoted to advance our understanding of windstorm hazards and their impact on structures. To fulfill this mission, we are developing novel instrumentation able to capture the most extreme events. This picture was taken at our departure from Wilmington NC after successfully deploying instrumentation during Hurricane Florence. This Hurricane reached up to Category 4 in the Atlantic Ocean and decreased its intensity to Category 1 when it made landfall. This rapid decrease drove people to stay home and avoid the evacuation orders. However, even though Hurricane Florence wasn't as extreme on the wind side, it occasioned important losses due to flooding and took many lives. The data we acquire from events like this one will help us to better understand the hazard and design more resilient infrastructure.
