Abstract
The Carnegie Hall Millennium Piano Book
was published in 2000 and
represents a collection of compositions intended as commissions for Carnegie Hall.
The book contains ten works by American composers Elliott Carter, Frederic Rzewski,
John Harbison, Milton Babbitt, Ellen Taaffe Zwilich, and Hannibal; Chinese
composers Chen Yi and Tan Dun; German composer Wolfgang Rihm; and Dutch
composer Louis Andriessen. The purpose of this paper is to provide a stylistic overview and some additional
performance suggestions for
the selected solo piano works by
Harbison,
Rzewski,
Zwilich,
Andriessen,
Rihm,
Chen Yi,
and Tan Dun.
It also
presents a thorough
investigation of the musical and pianistic issues
for study by skilled high school
students and undergraduate collegiate piano majors.
The focus of this research
will be
on the performance issues as well as the pedagogical aspects presented in these works.
Detailed discussions focus on pianistic approaches to tone production and pedaling and
offer some specific observations on rhythm, articulation, and dynamics. Aspects of
timbre, texture, harmony, melody, and form are also discussed as they relate to
interpretation and performance.
This will lead to a better understanding of the music
and provide a basis for the interpretation and practice techniques for the works.
The document will provide an examination of each composer’s treatment of genre and form,
the individual musical language, and the style of writing for the
piano.
