Abstract
Clarinet doubling for jazz saxophonists
has become the “norm” in a modern context.
There is very little in regard to formal or informal pedagogy
available
to help those interested in
clarinet
doubling. In my own experience as a jazz saxophonist, I was introduced to doubling on
the clarinet by being told to play it in big band, and given little guidance or direction. The idea
of “learning it
[clarinet]
on the gig” is incredibly limiting and possibly damaging to a
jazz
saxophonist’s ability to play the
clarinet at a superior level.
With this project, I plan to address
many of the common
issues
that
jazz
saxophonists come across while learning to double on the
clarinet. This project will focus
on learning to double in an auto-didactic setting and will consist
of a combination of consulting industry professionals who have professional level experience on
saxophone and clarinet as well as drawing from my own experiences with learning to play the
clarinet at a high level through learning the instrument in personal practice, rehearsal,
performance, clinics, master-classes,
and teaching private lessons.
This
project
is
intended
to
serve saxophonists who already have a background in jazz and wish to quickly and correctly
learn to perform on the clarinet. It will guide those
jazz
saxophonists to overcome the many
pitfalls of study of such a
closely related instrument
as the clarinet.
I will assemble and organize
a methodology of solutions to common
issues
that
jazz
saxophonists find when learning to play
the clarinet and who wish to engage in a focused study on how to correctly
double on
the clarinet
at a higher proficiency.
