NOTE: This is an interactive visualization.
The under-funding of pensions in Illinois has already gotten a lot of political attention at the state level. It has begun to garner more and more attention at local levels, as under-funding of municipal police/fire pension funds have led to devastating layoffs in Harvey, IL and now Peoria, IL, both in 2018. Many more local communities may be at risk. The Illinois Department of Insurance releases yearly reports on all downstate (outside Chicago) municipal police/fire funds, although the data is convoluted within large documents and difficult to extract. This visualization lets a user get down to the important numbers and interactively explore the health of funds throughout the state and in their local community. The first graph gives an overview of the funding gap at an overall state level throughout time. After scrolling down, an interactive map shows the health at a county level, and then lets a user drill down further to reveal at an individual fund level. This visualization reveals that the majority of Illinois communities are at risk just as Harvey and Peoria were, and should serve as a convincing call to action to this issue.
