According to a CDC report, in 2017 only 12 percent of American adults met the recommended intake of 1 and 1/2 fruits/day. Fruits are sources of essential nutrients that are under-consumed in the U.S., including potassium, dietary fiber, vitamin C, and folate. Diets rich in potassium may help to maintain healthy blood pressure. Dietary fiber from fruits, as part of an overall healthy diet, helps reduce blood cholesterol levels and may lower risk of heart disease. Vitamin C is important for growth and repair of all body tissues, helps heal cuts and wounds, and keeps teeth and gums healthy. Folate helps the body form red blood cells. Women of childbearing age who may become pregnant should consume adequate folate from foods.” Conventional wisdom has it that “an apple a day keeps the doctor away”. Yet, even when apples are may be the most popular food item related to the idea of a healthy diet, there are plenty of flavorful fruits that offer even more of these key nutrients than apples themselves. Here, I offer not just a default Top 10 of each one of these key nutrients in fruits, but also an interactive graph that allows comparisons upon users’ choice.
