- Abstract
This is a research of the transportation, urban texture, landmark of a particular site in downtown Chicago for one of my architecture design projects. The project is a concept design of a 6 stories vertical garden aiming to improve downtown air quality and providing the commons for people to gather and enjoy the nature in downtown. Therefore, the analysis of the urban layout and the amount of traffic flow are critical to my project.
By using hierarchy and isometric view, this diagram splits and visualize six different urban related issue, including surrounding buildings’ shape and footprint, blocks textures, the waterbody (Chicago River), traffic flow, potential of development, and the street network.
This analysis helped me understand the opportunities and challenges of this particular part of downtown Chicago. It provided me with an intuitive perspective to compare the pros and cons of each block and street. With this diagram, I understand how to apply the design strategies to this site and finally make a positive change to the downtown.
The Average Daily Traffic data (the number only) used in the diagram are from the City of Chicago Data Portal.
