Abstract
This thesis presents a legitimacy assessment method. Three core elements constitute the basis of the method - the stakeholder figure, the legitimacy themes and the legitimacy bases. The analysis combines the deductive and inductive investigative approaches. The context for the legitimacy assessment is the Illinois livestock industry. Results indicate
the Illinois livestock industry has severe legitimacy liabilities. Additionally, the industry strategy may be ineffective addressing the legitimacy challenges posed by local communities. A secondary result of the research identifies the role of the legitimacy agent as a central component of the legitimacy state. Recommendations to improve the current legitimacy state of the Illinois livestock industry are provided.
