Abstract
Opera singers face many challenges when they start preparing for a newly
created
opera. They might be unfamiliar with the work's musical style and the language, and of
course nothing has been written about the opera yet. This study provides information on
Je-Myeong Hyun’s opera
The Tale of Chun-Hyang
and guides prospective singers to the
role of Wolmae for mezzo-soprano or contralto voice.
This study includes an interview with actress-singer Sung-Nyo Kim, who has
built her career playing characters in the traditional Korean opera,
The Tale of Chun-Hyang,
for over 50 years. Because of her diversity and longevity, her views are worth
considering regarding the opera and its performance.
The Tale of Chun-
Hyang
is a story that has been used in both Changgeuk and
ChangJak
opera. Therefore, this study approaches
The Tale of Chun-Hyang
and the role
of Wolmae not only from the perspective of a Western opera singer, but also that from a
traditional Korean singer, even though the opera is in
ChangJak,
the Western style.
