Abstract
Tobias Picker (1954- ), currently the Artistic Director of the Tulsa Opera, has also
served as Artistic Consultant
of the New York City Opera. As a composer, Picker is
noted primarily for his operas. His works for
piano, though of equal musical value, have
received less widespread attention.
Picker has composed eight works for solo piano, employing different
compositional approaches and styles. Most of them are in a highly tonal style with
traditional pianistic texture and harmonic language. Like his operas, some of his piano
compositions are quite dramatic. This document offers a study of the relevant aspects of
the tonality, rhythm, form, texture, and style in Picker’s piano works while also providing
performance suggestions for pianists.
