- Abstract
- Activities of the proposed Illinois Learning Sciences Design Lab (ILSDL) include designing, prototyping, developing, trialing, assessing, scaling, disseminating and commercializing evidence-based, replicable, transformational, and cutting-edge technological platforms and tools in support of 21st century learning and teaching practices and environments. The paper identifies primary objectives for the center, covering research on learning; design and development of learning tools and solutions; and developing data analytics and data mining tools and approaches. Faculty and graduate student constituencies are to be brought together from across the campus, and the development of a network of strategic partners interested in designing and testing learning technologies and solutions that have transformative potential. Finally, the paper defines Grand Challenges to be pursued by the lab including designing physical learning spaces of the future; curating and analyzing big data to transform unitary platforms into adaptive personalized learning environments; and broadening participation and deepening identification with the STEM areas.
