Abstract
Every day, UIUC students decide regarding the type of transportation they will use to get to class. Whether they decide to walk, drive, bus, or bike to class depends on their accessibility to those forms of transportation, as well as personal preference. The purpose of our research was to better understand the reasons behind students choosing to ride their bike. Overall infrastructure, the bike signage, and the lighting on the bike paths were some of the aspects that cause a student to avoid biking on campus. In order to figure out common trends among UIUC student bikers, it was vital to gather quantitative and qualitative data regarding the perspectives of, both, bikers and non-bikers. We were able to complete this task and collect significant data through a sample of students using an online survey, focus group, and observations. We were able to conclude that while our campus is moderately safe for bikers, there is still a lot of room for improvement.
