Abstract
The purpose of this research is to gain insight into the current state of jazz drum
education at the middle and high school level, thereby identifying methodology
that will better prepare jazz band directors to teach drummers.The
two primary foci of this research are
to
provide an idea of how confident jazz
band directors are in teaching their drummers about
essential jazz drum elements and to offer insight into which of those elements teachers perceive
need to be added to their
methodology. Through this understanding,
I will offer suggestions and
tips that teachers can use as a quick reference when instructing drummers in a big band setting.
In addition to providing a supplemental reference for teachers, this research will examine the educational and professional backgrounds
of each participant. This will illuminate which type of
research participants report the highest
level of confidence in teaching jazz drumming
and their methodology for doing so. From this data, I will examine the types of educational and
professional paths that foster the most confidence in teaching jazz drumming.
