Abstract
The goal of this research was to investigate the parenting practices underlying the intergenerational transmission of math anxiety. Parents (N = 175) of early elementary school children (mean age = 7.4 years) reported on their math anxiety. They also reported on the quality of their assistance with their children’s math homework (e.g., if their assistance was controlling); children also reported on their math anxiety at this time and 3 months later. We found that when parents were more math-anxious, their children were also math-anxious. Math-anxious parents were also more likely to be controlling with assisting their children with homework, thus creating more math anxiety in the child over time. These findings provide evidence for unconstructive parenting practices that contribute to the intergenerational transmission of math anxiety.
