Abstract

I am interested in ephemerality, decay, dying, death. The absence of things that were once there but aren’t anymore. As a dancer, I always feel it necessary to enact my research through my movement practices; but sometimes, that doesn’t make sense. I need a new way in. I embroider phrases on leaves and leave them in our landscape: a fleeting work of art left behind for nature (instagram: @leaf.me.alone.okay). Can this process be translated to movement, to things that don’t have such a solidified lifespan? I am looking at absence in design mediums, pictured here, Photoshop, supposing the ephemerality of the infinite possibilities that reside within what I make and how that resonates in how we perceive. I keep returning to questions embedded in the processes of decaying, death, and mourning, and what it means for something to be absent if we never knew of its original presence. How does this affect our knowledge of lineages, definitive and abstract, and how do we cope with it?
