- Abstract
- The vibration of particles in matter is what we know as sound. What is less known is that as sound propagates through fluid media, there are weak steady currents set up. These so-called streaming currents are responsible for the muffling of sound with distance. Although ubiquitous, the flows are highly random and elusive in the macroscopic world. By synchronizing the shutter speed of the camera (or blinking) with the exact frequency of the sound, the complex and steady flow patterns reveal themselves under a microscope. These streams are a property of only the sound and the fluid. In our research, we use computational image processing techniques to extract important information about the nature of the fluid from images of the flow made visible by small tracer particles. This allows us to probe useful fluid properties which conventional techniques cannot.
