- Abstract
- The countertenor voice is a male voice type which uses falsetto and has a long history in the Western music. Similarly, the Nan Dan is a similar voice type using falsetto which derived from China. Based on my experience singing as a countertenor and background in the Chinese culture, this essay is designed to compare the Nan Dan from China and the countertenor of the West, concentrating in particular on the possible influences of the countertenor and the Nan Dan in Gao Weijie’s Three Love Songs, and the influence of the countertenor in modern China.
