Abstract
Transcriptions of Bach's chorale preludes
have largely been
an unexplored
area
of the
piano repertoire, although these often direct and faithful arrangements offer excellent
opportunities for pianists to
work on developing
listening skills, as well as lyricism and
sensitivity
in their playing.
This thesis explores
A Bach
Book for Harriet Cohen
(1932), with particular
emphasis on nine works from the volume’s chorale
prelude transcriptions and its only song
arrangement. The thesis will be supported by a doctoral project recital, with the aim of reviving
and promoting these transcriptions as both pedagogical and performing literature for today’s
pianists.
