Abstract
The purpose of this study is to investigate Franz Liszt’s Marian settings of six selected
piano works, in order to explore and to offer insights into Liszt’s religious perception through an
overview and a comparison of the selected works. They include
Sposalizio
from
Deuxième
Année de Pèlerinage: Italie;
Ave Maria
from
Harmonies Poétiques et Religieuses;
Ave Maria
–
Die Glocken von Rom; Ave Maris Stella;
Ave Maria
S504/2 and
Ave Maria
S545.
The thorough
analysis will involve examining and comparing the extra-musical sources, religious symbols and
motives, and other compositional devices. It is concluded that they share similarities and deserve
to be grouped as a set. Through analyzing and comparing the pieces, and exploring their
characteristics, this project sheds light on some of Liszt’s lesser-known works, and shows their
continuing relevance in the twenty-first century.
